![]() ![]() He is innovative and also represents order on the island. Piggy is a rational and intellectual boy who gives them the best ideas. Ralph, sensing a savage streak in Jack, and feeling intimidated, decides to put Jack's savageness to use by making him the leader of the hunting team. The boys are then split into groups and are given certain tasks, an arrangement which also shows their civilized attitude. Ralph decides that whoever is holding the conch shell has the right to speak, a rule which suggests civilization through democracy, and which establishes the conch shell as an important symbol for civilization. They pick Ralph as their leader because of his responsible attitude, which shows that they care for law and order. The novel shows what happens when these elements of society clash without laws.Īt first, the idea of order and civilization is still fresh in the boys' minds as they decide to make laws and pick a leader. Ralph represents law and democracy, Piggy represents innovation and discovery, Simon represents the natural goodness in humanity, Jack represents tyranny, Roger represents cruelty and injustice, the littluns represent the common poor people, and the bigguns represent the higher class in the society. Each of the characters define parts of society. ![]() Golding demonstrates this world-view by putting English boys alone to fend for themselves on an island without any adults to enforce civilization. The society we live in shapes and forms us to act the way we do, but it cannot completely wipe out the savage nature of men, for that is our base foundation. In a world with rule and order we're forced to put on a mask of respectability and sacrifice some pleasures for the greater good of society. ![]() While order and civilization are situations in which humans are forced to suppress their instincts and follow rules to attain higher goals. So they just had wanted to do the very same thing to feel good about their own self. The plot of William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies suggests that Golding supports the biblical idea that every human is born tainted with evil, and that men are born savage, driven by their instincts.Ĭhaos and savagery come about as a result of men trying to attain pleasure without making any sacrifice or applying any effort. Because in possibly some way they had been bullied by someone who had a higher authority and more power than them. They possibly just wanted to fit in, and feel acceptance. I think it is that savage leaders from Jack all the way to Hitler it was almost the same as Piggy's character. By that time it seemed like the whole tribe had been fully brain washed by Jack, as thus it being a small dictatorship. When Piggy had tried to stand up for what was right he had got crushed by the big boulder. Yet he seemed like he created his own little dictatorship. The tribe members were scared to stand up for them selves and speak out because Jack had full power over them and had gotten what he finally had wanted. Peer pressure came into play as Jack slowly has the whole tribe other than Piggy on his side. Seeing that Ralph wouldn't allow it Jack seemed to rebel and went his own way. As the novel went on Jack demanded for power over the group with Ralph. Jack who was the one who seemed to be thirsty for power and authority then Ralph who was the civilized one who in the beginning was the leader. In the novel it was very obvious who had symbolized civilization and who symbolized savagery. Civilized people are known to be great peace makers, but yet it seems like the savage people are the ones better known for example as Hitler. Some people act out in just a civilized manner as well as just acting out in a savage way. Some things we seem to take from savagery is to act out in violence in such situations to get and show authority to others and show our power. We live in the civilized way by peace, morals, laws, trust, and loyalty are just some examples of being and living civil. As humans we all have both a civilized side as well as a savagery side. ![]()
